Yes — for spray gun use the paint needs thinning at a 1:1 ratio. That means equal parts paint and thinner, regardless of the quantity used. You’ll find the specifics in the description of each product, or in our How To Use guide. Aerosols come ready to spray and need no thinning.

It depends on the effect: Chameleon, Pearl, Holographic and Ghost generally go over a black base (white for Ghost and Fluorescent to keep them bright), while Candy colours sit over a silver metallic base. We recommend finishing every effect paint with a quality clear coat to lock in the colour, add depth and protect against UV and wear. Our Etalon Clear Coat is ideal, and you’ll find it alongside all our grounds in the Base & Clear Coats section.

As a rule, apply 2–4 thin, even coats, letting each flash off before the next. More coats deepen candies and build the effect on chameleons and pearls; ghost pearls need fewer, lighter coats. Always finish with 2–3 coats of clear. Full step-by-step guidance is in How To Use.

Special-effect paints shift with light, angle and the base coat underneath, and screens vary, so photos and swatches are a guide rather than an exact match. That’s part of what makes these finishes special — but do treat the images as an approximation of the true colour.

Consistency is key: thin at 1:1, strain your mix, and apply thin even passes with a 50% overlap. Uneven coats are the main cause of patchiness on chameleons and mottling on pearls. Let each coat flash before the next, and always test on a scrap panel first.
